The Kress Building on Dexter Avenue stands as a beacon of Montgomery’s revitalization, blending historic preservation with modern innovation. Originally completed in 1929, this Neo-Classical structure was meticulously restored to honor its architectural heritage. The original terra cotta façade, terrazzo tile flooring, and brass-inlaid marble were thoughtfully preserved, while much of the building’s ornamental plasterwork was replicated after significant water damage during its years of vacancy. A new, contemporary mezzanine enhances the grand double-height ground floor, creating a dynamic space for retail and community engagement.

The reimagined Kress on Dexter now serves as a vibrant mixed-use development that revitalizes the heart of downtown Montgomery. Housing retail, restaurants, and cultural spaces on the lower levels, the building also features modern office space, event venues, and 29 contemporary apartments. The design takes full advantage of natural light and the adjacent pocket park, fostering a sense of community and connectivity. By blending historic character with modern amenities, the Kress Building has become a hub for art, culture, and economic development, bringing new life to one of America’s most historic streets.

Architectural innovation seamlessly integrates old and new throughout the building. Salvaged materials, including beams from the 1860 Montgomery Theatre, were repurposed into the second story’s tongue-and-groove flooring. The restoration required precision engineering, with laser-scanning technology used to design structural upgrades that would support two new floors, adding 164 tons of steel beams to the top of the building. These updates ensure the Kress Building’s functionality and resilience, while preserving its historic charm and telling a story of reinvention.
