Completed in 2025, the Wiregrass Pet Rescue & Adoption Center provides a modern, purpose-built facility for animal care, adoption, and community engagement in Dothan and the surrounding Wiregrass region. The project brings housing, medical care, adoption services, and public education together in one facility designed to improve conditions for both animals and the people who care for them.
The center includes separate housing areas for dogs, cats, and other animals, with kennel configurations that provide flexibility as shelter populations and needs change. Dedicated medical treatment and quarantine areas allow staff to evaluate, treat, and isolate animals when necessary while supporting infection control throughout the facility. Get-acquainted rooms give prospective adopters a comfortable setting to interact with animals before making the decision to bring a pet home. Public-facing spaces make the facility more welcoming and accessible to the community. An adoption lobby, education center, and coffee bar create opportunities for visitors to learn about animal welfare, spend time in the facility, and connect with available pets. These spaces help expand the center’s role beyond that of a traditional animal shelter.
Funded with support from the City of Dothan, Houston County, and the Wiregrass Foundation, the facility represents a significant regional investment in animal welfare. Its adaptable design and comprehensive services provide long-term capacity to care for lost, abandoned, and vulnerable animals while supporting adoption and responsible pet ownership throughout the Wiregrass.
“This isn’t just a building. It’s a promise,” said Matt Parker, President of the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce. “A promise that every animal will be safe, cared for, and loved again.”
