Coming in under budget by $1.25 million, this project includes 74,000 square feet of renovation and two 21,000 square foot additions, transforming this previously occupied Public Safety Building into the new Alabama Attorney General’s Office and the Alabama Division of the Department of Homeland Security. Occupants such as these required state-of-the-art office spaces with the most current HVAC and data/telecommunications services. Nevertheless, this project was completed on a fast-track schedule. Design was completed in 6 months, and construction lasted 2 years, facilitating its swift reopening in October 2008. Located directly Southwest of the State Capitol on Alabama’s Capitol Complex, the original Public Safety Building was built in 1937; and, therefore, required intense design sensitivity to the existing building aesthetic. The end result is an updated, expanded facility that provides a seamless transition into the architectural aesthetic of the State Capitol Complex. It was also important that the existing building transition seamlessly into the additions.
